Old Castlemaine Gaol

Castlemaine

Mysteries Lost in History Paranormal Exploration invite you to come and explore, question and experience one of Victoria’s most intriguing historic locations after dark.

Perched high on a hill overlooking the township of Castlemaine, the imposing walls of the old Castlemaine Gaol still stand watch over the town, concealing a dark and unsettling past.

Built during the gold rush era in the early 1860s, the gaol became home to countless prisoners, many of whom would never walk free again. Between 1865 and 1876, ten executions were carried out within its walls.

The condemned men were hanged inside the main gaol building, in an area visible to other prisoners. The solid wooden beam from which the hangman’s noose was suspended still remains, embedded within the roofline. Overhead, the trapdoor of the gallows remains as a haunting reminder of what once took place here.

Step inside and you enter a place where history feels uncomfortably close. The brutal punishments, suffering and fear experienced by those who lived and died here have left behind stories that continue to draw us back.

What is it about these dark places that captures our imagination? What happened here? And what, if anything, might still remain?

Walk the halls and descend into the basement and discover another side of gaol life. Enter a solitary confinement cell and experience the oppressive darkness, dampness and isolation for yourself. With nothing but the darkness around you, how long can you last?
